Altro Valanchie Tate was born and raised in Hammond, Louisiana, just north of New Orleans. He is the second born to his parents, along with 6 siblings. He is a single father of beautiful and amazing twins.
His childhood story is not unlike that of a lot of African Americans who grew up in poverty, which includes street life, violence, gangs, and drugs. However, as a child, he developed a passion for art and music, which eventually afforded him a full scholarship to college. He attended The University of Southern Mississippi, where he studied music with an emphasis on vocal performance, conducting, and music business. He has produced and performed with well-known musicians and has owned and operated an independent record label. During his childhood, he lived in various parts of the U.S. This, in addition to studying music in college, provided him opportunities to travel and be exposed to different cultures and foods in both the U.S. and other countries. Although his original aspirations were in music production and art, he has always had a passion for food and cooking and views it as a form of artistic expression. After college, Altro began a career in telecommunications engineering operations, which is still his profession. Yet his passion for cooking remains and has grown over the years. During his free time, he spends a lot of time in the kitchen trying out new recipes as well as trying to replicate or improve upon something that he was exposed to either at a restaurant or on a cooking show. His philosophy on cooking is, “ I don’t view cooking as work. It’s something I truly enjoy doing for many reasons. If you truly love doing it, even without the credentials of the professionals, you can still create a beautiful delicious meal.” So, following the advice of family and friends, he began to log these recipes and wanted to somehow share them with the world. He attributes the influence of these recipes to his exposure to various cultures, his parents, and his brothers. Understanding self-publishing from his prior experiences in the music industry, he decided to release them on his own. These recipes are now available in a series of books titled It’s Your Turn To Cook.
